and he is 10 years old now, is an insulin dependant three
times a day. Morning 12 units mixtard 30/70 and evening 12-14
depending on his food intake. Afternoon, HumulinR 4 - 6 units.
He is in fifth standard now. We take him for check up every
six months, so far everything seems to be OK. During holidays
he eats more and less activities. So the sugar level will be
high two days a week. Please give necessary advise and
precaution measures to keep him healthy. Thanks and regards, |

| Question: I am 42 years old
and staying in U.K. my doctor told me I have sugar, colestrol
and BP. My parents have sugar. But i am not taking medicine.
because i donot like to take medicine all times. will you
please tell me the symotoms of the above diseses. thanking you
joy |
Name: joy |
| Answer: Sir, If your doctor
has advised you medications I may tell you that you should
have it.Diabetes is a silent killer and the serious
consequences of diabetes is largely due to ignorance and lack
of awareness. If blood sugars remain high for long it will
slowly damage internal organs and will also damage the beta
cells in your pancreas with no more insulin production.I have
noticed that some pts are concerned more about adverse effects
of drugs while it is the underlying disease which is the
actual culprit.jothydev |

| Question: I'm 53 working in
Saudi for the last 16 years everytime I go on vacation I used
to check my blood sugar (Fasting and PPBS) and Cholesterol in
the same Conventional Testing Lab. in Palakkad, the readings
were well within normal limit all these years. Last January I
went on vacation and spent more than 2 months in India during
which I had no control and I had lots of sweet items. At the
end I checked my Fasting and PPBS in the same lab. the
readings were 160 and 280 respectively. Thereafter I returned
to Saudi and maintained strict diet control, no sweets of any
kind, had regular exercise for more than a month, I checked my
blood sugar again in a Polyclinic with Computer Testing
Facilities in Jeddah, to my surprise, I found their readings
were very abnormal Fasting-257 and PPBS-352. I'm in a confused
situation which is correct and worth to be trusted. My parents
and my brothers/sister none of them have sugar complaint. I
maintain my health well, no drink and never smoke. I want an
answer from you Doctor, how my reading went up when I totally
avoided sugar, maintained strict diet control and did regular
exercise? |
Name: Madhavan |
| Answer: Sir, First of all you
have to be very careful with labs because of the variations
which can happen because of the lack of quality control. In
your case the blood sugars were very high while in India
itself. You are not supposed to do severe exercise and dieting
while sugars are that high. The stress can again produce hike
in sugar values since you were not on medications.Since
asymptomatic for a long period diabetes can go unnoticed until
complications sets in.Pl go for a comprehensive management
program.jothydev@vsnl.com |

patient and taking Glucophage 500 ml. 3 tab/day. How I can
completly recovered from diabetics ? |
Name: Lalu |
| Answer: Sir, Diabetes is a
life style illness whih requires continuous care and

| Question: According to the
doctors in Oman, diabets should not eat fruits. But I read
somewhere that fruits are essential for diabets. Will you
please advice your opinion.Rgds/Aziz |
Name: Abdul |
| Answer: The diet of diabetic
pts depends on the treatment regimen. If the blood sugars are
high, then fruits will trigger the rise in blood
sugars. However nowadays fruits are said to have a positive
effect in the prevention of some cancers which makes it
mandatory in a healthy diet. One iddaly will have 1 carb(15 gm
carbohydrate) which is the same as in one orange and in one
apple.Modern day diabetic management is aimed at "Healthy diet
for the entire family" and not the old fashioned diabetic
diet.Whatever you take the targets for blood sugar should
remain normal.Good luck!!! |

is: whether it is safe to take insulin and oral drugs
intermittently? The answer is YES and NO.In some pts after a
few courses of insulin , sugar level drops in such a way that
they can be controlled with just oral drugs. In many others the
sugar levels never becomes normal on switching back to oral
drugs. In such pts it is advisable to continue insulin without

Name: Vetticalayil |
| Answer: pl visit our site
www.jothydev.net Exenatide belongs to a new class of anti
diabetic medications namely Incretin mimetics. Incretins
potentiate meal-induced insulin production and secretion by
the beta-cells and lower the blood glucose level in the
presence of hyperglycaemia. Exenatide is derived from
Extendin-4 found in the saliva of Gila monster (Heloderma
suspectum) a giant lizard found in some parts of the Americas
and Mexico. This is the only injection other than insulin now
available for the treatment of diabetes. Exendin-4 might also
have direct effects on beta-cell neogenesis that are
independent of insulin demand. The root of administration is
subcutaneous (eg 5 mcg/bd). Exanetide is known by the name
Byetta and was approved by US -FDA in April 2005.This drug is
expected to hit the Indian market by 2007, the main limiting
factor being the high cost. |

more ido |
Name: varkeybose |
| Answer: When some body has
good control of blood sugar exercise will have lots of
benefits. If done on a regular basis then you may be able to
reduce the dose of drugs under advise from your doctor because

| Question: I am type 2
diabetic for the past 25 years and am on insulin ( 23 units
a.m. and 22 units pm) with proper diet and regular exercise.
Could I ever expect to come off the insulin.? Can you suggest
a program for the above so that I can reach my goal. Please
note that I have been residing in the United States for the
last 30 eyears.Thanx........G. Thomas. |
Name: GEORGE |
| Answer: Type 2 diabetic
patients are not really insulin dependent in the beginning,
but if there is no residual beta cell activity left there
won't be any chance for insulin production.Nowadays initiation
of diabetes treatment is with the help of insulin sensitisers
and some times a short course of insulin so that the patient
can be treated in future without administering insulin
provided he is under tight metabolic control.C peptide levels
will also help answering your question.I am sure you are happy
with your insulin and the present health status.Good
luck!!! |

diabetes health care provider team and strictly control your

| Question: i am a diabetic
patient for the last two years. i came to know that high
diabetics will affect kidneys. how can we know that our
kidneys are affected? what are the symptoms for that? |
Name: Mansoor |
| Answer: Sir, You are right
that diabetes if ignored can affect the
kidneys.Microalbuminuria detection is one test which will give
you an indication of early involvement of the kidneys ; when
specific treatment will help in total reversal of the
condition. When advanced it will lead on to increase in urea,
creat, potassium etc.,The good news is that modern intensive
treatment will help pts avoid such very expensive and dreaded
complications.Pl remember to do microalbumin every year even
if everything appears normal. regards, jothydev |

daily in the morning and evening. Could you pls. tell me waht
is the difference of taking tablets before and after food. And
pls specify if we take the tab before food, what should be the
minimum/ maximum time to be observed. |
Name: SUBAIR |
| Answer: Sir, Most of the
medications for diabetes are to be taken 10 to 15 mts before
food.Metformin may be taken after food, it there is gastric
irritation.Acarbose, Miglitol etc., are taken along with
food.Insulins are taken 15 to 30 mts before food and not after
food. The new analog insulin lantus is taken before or after
food.Rapid acting analog insulins Aspart(novolog) or
lispro(Humalog) can be taken just 5 mts before food. regards,

Dev,1)Is insulin receptors are present in brain. If yes, what
is their role?2) What is the relation between stroke and
diabetes. 3) Recently diabetic patients in our state are
consuming plants like insulin plant(costus species). Is it
good?4) How does weight loss is happening in diabetic
patients. |
Name: Gireesh.G |
| Answer: Sir, 1.Yes.In the
brain, insulin, insulin-like growth factors and their
receptors regulate glucose metabolism and promote neuronal
growth.2.Diabetes is now defined as a syndrome which causes
blocks in blood vessels.Hence incidence of heart attacks and
strokes are very high unless treated under a comprehensive
package.3.No studies are available on the benefits of insulin
plants. We are also not aware of its long term adverse
effects.4.High blood sugars lead to a catabolic state.Obese
