‘Agnikhandakarnan’ theyyam has its origin from Lord Shiva’s neck. The purpose of the theyyam is supposedly, to evict small pox. This theyyam is considered to have great healing properties.

Lord Shiva who got rid of the threat of small pox ordered for the elimination of the disease from earth as well. According to myths, it was the ‘Khandakarnan’ of Kodungallur who was assigned with the task.

The theyyam consumes both blood and wine. It is only after the strict observance of certain rituals that the person transforms himself into theyyam . These types of theyyams are usually seen in the coastal areas of Thrikkarippur.
