Kannur: As Kerala was put on a high alert following a phone call threatening terror attacks in the state, two batteries along with wires lying on a platform in the railway station here kept the police on their toes before they found that these were parts of a railway communication equipment.
The batteries and the wires were found close to the signal office on platform No 1 and immediately taken out of the station for examination, police and railway officials said. After thorough checking, the officials found that the batteries were used in an equipment meant for communication with gatemen, they said.
Meanwhile, the Okha-Ernakulam Express train coming from Gujarat was halted here at around 7.15 pm and a search was carried out for possible explosive substances, railway sources said. Following the serial blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad, police have sounded a high alert and had been maintaining stepped up vigil by pressing into service dogs and bomb squads in crowded places like bus stands and markets, they said.
The alert was heightened after a journalist of a Bangalore TV channel got a phone call which threatened that blasts will take place in Kerala. Intense vigil was being maintained on the movement of vehicles like two-wheelers and cycles by carrying out random checks, police said.
