Blowin’ in the Wind
Blowing in the Wind is a song written by Bob Dylan as a protest song which asks a series of questions about peace, war and freedom. It was the anthem of the Civil Rights Movement of 1960s. He presents the problems of our society and tells us that it is really absurd to go unnoticed. He also tells us that there are people suffering while others pay no attention to them. In this poem, the poet asks nine questions in which no specific answers are given or expected. All the answers are known to all and blowing in the wind. People only need open their eyes and ears to catch them. The poet asks first "how many roads must a man walk down before you call him a man?" The poet implies how much a man should experience in life or how long a man should endure in life before he is recognized as a human being. He asks how many seas a white dove should sail before it can find a place to sleep peacefully in this world. White doves are a symbol of peace, and the poet raises the question when they are going to get really the symbolized peace. The question, how many times the cannon balls must fly before they are banned forever" is a similar question about peace and freedom. White doves and banning of cannon balls are signals of the arrival of peace and end of wars and conflicts; but when will all they be realized?
The poet proclaims that the oppressive forces as huge and strong as a mountain cannot resist for long the equally powerful ocean of protests of common people who are deprived of their human rights. How long can the people of a nation be kept under slavery? No rulers or common people can pretend to be blind, deaf and dumb for long and ignore the reality. How many times should a man look up to the sky to see the light of freedom or clouds of war, how many ears he should have to hear the cry of the down-trodden, a that many have already died? Both the authorities and common people should see and hear the reality. The poet exhorts the people who are subjected should rise to the occasion to protest against the injustices.
All the questions in the poem are the best example of the literary device Rhetorical question. The poet talks about the answers which are floating in the wind and known to all. He keeps on asking questions and talks about answers repeating the lines "the answer, my friend, is blowin in the wind, the answer is blowin' in the wind" without actually answering. This kind of repetition of lines is example of the poetic device Refrain. The terms Mountain and sea are metaphors representing the oppressive might of authorities and the powerful protest of people respectively.
