The first municipality in the district formed in 1970, Malappuram serves as the administrative headquarters of Malappuram district. . Malappuram is situated 54 km southeast of Calicut and 90 km northwest of Palakkad.  Malappuram is the first Indian municipal body to achieve the International Organization for Standardization certificate. It is also the first complaint-free municipality in the state.

കോഴിക്കോട് നഗരത്തിൽ നിന്ന് 54 കിലോമീറ്റർ തെക്കുകിഴക്കായും പാലക്കാടിന് 90 കിലോമീറ്റർ വടക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറായുമാണ് മലപ്പുറം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്.  ഇന്റർനാഷണൽ ഓർഗനൈസേഷൻ ഫോർ സ്റ്റാൻഡേർഡൈസേഷൻ സർട്ടിഫിക്കറ്റ് നേടിയ ആദ്യ ഇന്ത്യൻ മുനിസിപ്പൽ ബോഡി കൂടിയാണ് മലപ്പുറം. സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ ആദ്യത്തെ പരാതി രഹിത നഗരസഭ കൂടിയാണിത്.
