Pathanamthitta  is a municipality situated in the Central Travancore region in the state of Kerala. It is the administrative capital of Pathanamthitta district. The Hindu pilgrim centre Sabarimala is situated in the Pathanamthitta district; as the main transport hub to Sabarimala, the town is known as the 'Pilgrim Capital of Kerala'. Forest covers more than half of the total area of the District. Pathanamthitta District ranks the 7th in area in the State. The district has its borders with Allepey, Kottayam, Kollam and Idukki districts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

കേരളത്തിലെ തെക്കൻ ജില്ലകളിലൊന്നാണ് പത്തനംതിട്ട . ജില്ലയുടെ ആസ്ഥാനം  പത്തനംതിട്ടയാണ്  . തിരുവല്ല, അടൂർ, പത്തനംതിട്ട, പന്തളം എന്നിവയാണ് പത്തനംതിട്ട ജില്ലയിലെ നഗരസഭകൾ. കേരളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും ജനസംഖ്യ കുറഞ്ഞ മൂന്നാമത്തെ ജില്ലയാണിത്. സമുദ്രതീരങ്ങളില്ലാത്ത ഈ ജില്ലയിലെ ഏക റെയിൽവേ സ്റ്റേഷൻ തിരുവല്ലയിലാണ്.
