Idukki district lies amid the Cardamom Hills of Western Ghats in Kerala. Idukki district contains two municipal towns - Kattappana and Thodupuzha. The district currently includes five taluks in it. Idukki is a township in Idukki district near to the district headquarter Painavu. The township consists of the towns of Cheruthony, Painavu , Thadiyampadu, Idukki proper and Vazhathope. Idukki town is an administrative town but the district headquarters is located at Painavu. The town is also a tourist Spot with Idukki dam, Asia's largest Arch dam and Cheruthony dam, Kerala's biggest dam. River Periyar flows through the heart of the town.

ഇടുക്കി ജില്ലയിൽ രണ്ട് മുനിസിപ്പൽ ടൗണുകളുണ്ട് - കട്ടപ്പനയും തൊടുപുഴയും. ജില്ലയിൽ നിലവിൽ അഞ്ച് താലൂക്കുകൾ ഉണ്ട്. ഇടുക്കി ജില്ലയിൽ ജില്ലാ ആസ്ഥാനമായ പൈനാവിനടുത്തുള്ള ഒരു ടൗൺഷിപ്പാണ് ഇടുക്കി. ചെറുതോണി, പൈനാവ്, തടിയമ്പാട്, ഇടുക്കി, വാഴത്തോപ്പ് എന്നീ പട്ടണങ്ങൾ ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്നതാണ് ടൗൺഷിപ്പ്. ഇടുക്കി പട്ടണം ഒരു ഭരണ നഗരമാണെങ്കിലും ജില്ലാ ആസ്ഥാനം പൈനാവിലാണ്. ഏഷ്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ആർച്ച് അണക്കെട്ടായ ഇടുക്കി അണക്കെട്ടും കേരളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ അണക്കെട്ടായ ചെറുതോണി അണക്കെട്ടും ഉള്ള ഈ നഗരം ഒരു വിനോദസഞ്ചാര കേന്ദ്രം കൂടിയാണ്. നഗരത്തിന്‍റെ ഹൃദയഭാഗത്തുകൂടി പെരിയാർ ഒഴുകുന്നു.
